Bark mulch
We just came home from a trip to southern New Hampshire where we saw the use of a reddish bark mulch in private gardens and public spaces. Everywhere it is used it looked so pretty and incredibly tidy. We wondered, does anyone know how they keep by DavesBonnyLass

Talkback: Mulching with compost
I agree with the idea of mulching with compost. Can you tell me which compost would be suitable for acid loving plants? Thanks Tracy You say you have used mushroom compost, have you ever used spent mushroom compost, is there any disadvantages by Sharon - Frinton On Sea

Shredding my rhododendrons for mulch
me that nothing grows under rhodedendrons due to chemicals they release into the soil. In which case can I use their shreddings as mulch on the garden and if not could they be used on the paths I want to make through my lawn and around raised beds. by Julie Forshaw

Newspaper under woodchips as mulch?
I have mulched with well-rotted wood chips before but I never seem to get a deep enough layer on to stop weeds germinating.  I have an area of newly-planted shrubs where I'd like to reduce the weeding for the rest of the year.  Would thick newspaper by Laura Corin

Mulching after rain - compacting soil?
We've had continual showers for the last week and are forecast for the same for the next week.  There are a couple of beds that I had intended to mulch but haven't got around to.  I remember reading that you shouldn't walk on beds that are too damp by Laura Corin

Preparing for wildflower seed sowing
I just watched last Fridays gardeners world and was inspired by the Somerset field of dreams. I would like to prepare a small bit of grass with the newspaper mulch method. My first question is what kind of mulch should I use and do I just dig all by Annibee

Have any of you tried straw as a winter mulch ?
I have quite a bit of spare straw and was wondering whether it would do as a winter mulch on my vegetable patch. Last year I put down a layer of manure, but it's unlikely I'll be able to do that in time for this winter. Will the straw rot down OK by blueberry77
