A light feed via a thin mulch of compost in spring helps but it depends on the grass. Imperata, deschampsia, miscanthus and hakonechloa seem to benefit from thicker mulch and feed. Nothing though on stipas. by carolyn gray

Grass
're planning on or mulch and then plant right through it. Keep in mind that even landscape fabric is not perfect, and grass IS going to grow through it. This will happen with the newspaper as well, but the cool thing is that next year, it will have degraded by Kathleen Hewson

What is the solution?
for feeding, you could use up any tomato feed you have left and water it onto the roots, see what happens. The normal time for feeding would be January or February but you could give a good mulch of compost and manure though the tree will be resting by bjay

Seaweed for nutrients
the base of the cabbage family and on my Asparagus bed without washing the salt off. It's very good round brassicas, as slugs and snails won't cross it to eat your plants. Washed by rain etc, you can mulch your beds with it after planting or dig it in.  I by TheGardenGoblin
