meadow plants
the prepared area in autumn but you can buy yellow rattle as plug plants in april.  Yellow rattle is a parasitic plant on grass and will help to create areas for other plants to grow. Find a supplier of wildflower plants and seeds on line; the list of native by dobby2

Wildlife
will struggle to compete with the existing grass.  If you want to do the seed thing then you'll need to dig out the grass and prepare the soil as you would for planting any seeds.  There are a few good websites where you can buy native wild flowers as either by barryfacey

how to cultivate moss where there is grass
and shade for the moss....my lawn is about 40% moss and in those areas violets and fox and cubs thrive.  You'll need to find the right wildflowers for those conditions (perhaps ragged robin and native ferns too), mine just appeared! Thank you.  Still by C15.52

Plant/seed identification please.
the seeds, it doesn't look like it unfortunately, but thanks for the suggestion. Try Mirabilis jalapa. aka Marvel of Peru or  4 o'clock flower. I'm pretty confident that it isn't a native wildflower (UK) though it will be a wild flower somewhere.  Seeds by Chris Rosillo

Great blog - thank you! Forget introducing all sorts of (unhelpful) non native species; I am regularly coming across the issue of native provenance in supplying wildflowers, and have been baffled why no-one has pointed out the problems you mention by lamyatt

It is sad to think of the dwindling numbers of wildflowers across the UK. Bees need an increasing variety of wildflowers to provide them with pollen - some of them are out as early as January and need as much help as they can get. We can all help by joey northwood kirkby allotments
