Problem Clay soil
) I have a very similar problem, I have rocky clay soil and don't really want raised beds. I have found the best remedy is to plant something with large stringy root base like parsley or certain types of ornamental grass. let them grow for a season by Stephen Warren

ANTS
-are you talking about a bag of potting compost or a garden compost bin? Ants love a dry compost bin -if it is wet they go elsewhere I too have recently suffered from an ants nest in one of my Dalek composting bins, where I had put some grass divots by BOMBER

Talkback: To chop or not to chop?
