Talkback: Living with lichen
perennial? If so, how tall does it grow and should it be cut back? I have one in the garden smothered in flowers but it is about 8ft high and dwarfing everything else. Doug: Just goes to show that lichens don't harm anything - if they're happy growing on a by Doug Ovenden

At wits end with carrots and slugs
resident hedgehog and loads of frogs in the garden. Tried again this year and had very successful germination only for them all to disappear only three days later. I know it's a perennial question but does anyone have any ideas.   What is really odd by Auntiemand

Plants for narrow border
for a mixed herbaceous border. It depends whether one wants neatness or a romantic mass of billowing plants, I suppose, but with a border full of perennials, one can get a long season of colour and just sheer beauty without actually having to make much by Berkley

Talkback: Mulching with compost
to keep weed seedlings down. Have also tried (SSH!) tap-rooted perennial weeds that haven't set seed. Is this likely to do any harm? Thought it worth a try. Spent mushroom compost is lovely stuff, but during the composting process lime is added, so never by Sharon - Frinton On Sea
