of teh trrees to allow in more light and, more impirtantly, more rain as the ground will get very dry under trees. Then have a look at forms of brunnera, lily of the valley, geranium macrorhizum, pachysandra, ferns such as Polystichum setiferum by DMG

dark, narrow strip along a walled area I think a combination of Asarum europaeum (evergreen and low-growing), Polystichum setiferum (evergreen), Geranium, Hosta, Helleborus niger would look lovely. Epimediums would be a possibility and also Campanula by emilym

are supposed to be harmless to wildlife, pets, etc. A large fern overhangs the pond and I think has invaded the water. Could it poison the water? It looks like Polystichum setiferum 'Proliferum' but I can't be sure of its identity. Are any plants poisonous by Daily Digger
