Duckweed
fish don't do it before you skim or all the food will go down the skimmer (obvious really). We used to have another pond which was pristine - no soil, minimal plants etc so that the koi were living in crystal clear water - a system which a lot of koi by celia2

Clematis pruning
.  If you do that, give them a good feed and mulch with a few inches of compost to build the soil level up at the roots. To be sure of what variety and group they are, is there any chance you could upload some photos? Other clematis groups might need a by Mrs Jamps

it would be instantly airborne through a closed window, we do not get on.Erythronium dens-canis likes organic rich deep soil and hate being waterlogged, not good this summer then. Once set in position in late summer they can be left for years and they do by jean riley

Salvia Sclarea
if it survives here then it can take the cold. We have had it without any trouble through the last 2 cold winters, -18c at times, it just pops up again,. the ones in the photo are self set in gravel, with a membrane underneath, not even straight into the soil. We by lovetogarden

Penstemons
have got covered in eggs small grey ones right at the bottom near soil.. will have to wait and see what they hatch into.. then start collecting them.. I have several penstemons in the garden and up to now all have survived the winters. I take quite a by Chris9

Hellebore varieties - suggestions please
of hellebores orientalis. Ashwood supply named varieties that I hope to get later but I do love the doubles. They are planted in areas of my garden where the soil is better...they hate the really dry parts. I intersperse with salvia patens, Astilbes by Dovefromabove

swede or weeds?
I sowed some swede (Helenor) a few weeks ago in a small square of a raised bed. I don't see much coming out of the soil, except for the 2 specimen below, which are coming just at the border of the bed. I never grew any swede, and don't know what by nadiamaz

quality. I spent over £50 on seeds last autumn and out of all the seeds i have sown since getting the seeds i have had about 5% success. SO I plan to sterilise soil and go down that route. Get to the garden centres!  At those I have visited in the last few by Lavender Lady

using chemicals but glyphosate breaks down to carbon dioxide and water on contact with soil so should be safe and is useful for spot-killing. I keep the top half of a plastic drink bottle (2 litre) to spray through, to avoid spraying my precious plants by Kathleen fortune

over regularly, it is also used by most of the cats in the area as it is always nice loose soil!)  It also deters slugs and snails. by belinda
