I garden on clay good clay at the top then a layer of dead clay wich nothing could survive in then below that chalk, I do add different things to the soil to try to make it more pliable but it remains very heavy to dig, waterlogged in winter by kaycurtis

Feeding poor-soil loving plants in pots?
Hi - I have got several plants that traditionally prefer poorer soil which are growing in pots, e.g. scabious, lavender, sedum, snow in summer, fleabane etc.  Just wondering if these should ever be fed.  I know that planted in the garden the advice by Lunarz

How long to leave manure on the soil before planting
I've prepared my new herbaceous borders and have all my plants potted up (very thankful it was a mild winter!).  To give everything a good start, I want to lay manure on top of the soil and let the worms do their work but I also want to get by HyppyByker

when is the best to mulch/improve the soil
it doesn't make a lot of difference- providing the soil is wet and not frozen   I usually do it in Autumn in case I'm late in spring and things have started to grow Autumn for me too, providing the soil is moist. Main reason is I have loads of bulbs by franco6832

What to do with soil that's got coal in it
Hi - just recently had the patio removed and discovered underneath it are wall foundations of an old building, which I think might have been a coal shed at some point because my beautiful soil has lots of tiny bits of coal and coal dust in it. I by kentish wiggler

Reusing clay soil to raise patio level?
Hi all, We're digging out the clay soil in a problem area of our garden and to save ourselves from injury, thought it best to hire a small skip to put it in. We wonder now though, as we are laying a patio also, is is possible to reuse the clay by Maff

Is it too late to plant garlic cloves now? I have very heavy clay soil as well. Thanks It is not too late to plant garlic - you tend to get a heavier crop from autumn plantings but I usually plant more cloves in the spring, I intend to buy some by StaceyF
