Please help me design my garden - part 1
the back of the border. Collect the seeds at the end of the season, put them in an envelope and sow them in a tray next Spring. You have some more plants and some to swap with friends. Perhaps friends might be splitting perennials and will give you some by Laura P

these vacant areas with cardboard until the spring. The covering will protect the soil from erosion during the winter months and the worms will pull the mulch into the soil during this time. No weed seeds will germinate and no air born seeds can penetrate by Baloo66

these are much more difficult to dig up and eradicate, and it appears that the rotavating cut them up into tiny pieces that all sprouted.My advice would be to just dig it over and cover until next spring, if you break the beds into reachable widths, say 2-3foot by Lauren W

the hardiness of Trachelospermum, though, as the weather's quite benign here in Essex (usually) and I never saw it much in Oxfordshire. I'm planning on planting one come the spring. My perreniall sweet pea dies back in winter, and of course, the tender climbers by Daniel Haynes

Talkback: It's sloe gin time
the same story across the country. It seems that the late frosts during the spring of 2008 killed off lots of blossom on the Blackthorn bushes, which in turn has really reduced the Sloe crop. Some of my local bushes which were absoloutely heaving with Sloes by Sue Batho

like giant leeks but come march time new leaves will suddenly appear again. during spring and summer you should get a new leaf every week from a basjoo, which is why it aint worth trying to protect and save the leaves from the previous year.....just let by jason

Talkback: The first bumblebee of the year
place at the right time. Spring has left in a hurry this week. I've seen a few bumble bees at Myerscough College, near Preston, on the heathers in the borders. They are much hardier than the honey bee and can forage in lower temperatures as well by Dancer

but the weather dropped very quickly in the autumn so I decided to leave them til this spring, getting them out the old pots was tricky I nibbled away with a small trowel around the edge of the pots then turning them on there sides and getting my hand down the gap by lorrie-koolkats
