Maskotka tomato seeds
The free Maskotka tomato seeds have almost all germinated and I've planted them up in a mixture of John Innes No 2 and 3 (as that was what I had to hand). They have shot up to almost a foot tall and are rather thin and weedy. Should I pinch out by Annee

Butterflies
. It was thin and 1.5 to 2 inches long. Could you give us a photo, because 1.5 to 2 inches long is mighty long for a thin caterpillar? Caterpillars can get quite large, when I returned from my jollies last year you would have thought the caterpillars had been by Kitty4

Windy roof garden destroying everything
last year. We have two protected beds at the edges of the roof which seem to be doing fine but the main bed in the middle (long thin shape) can't sustain much. A neighbour has found a coastal tree for the centre piece which we're hoping can withstand by Simon Hearn

I have a five and a half acre plot in Ross-Shire Northern Scotland. Half an acre of which is overrun with a bamboo which is 8-10 feet tall, leaves 4 -6 inches long , many remaining on the plant throughout the winter.Thin woody stems. Very invasive by Jan Hooper

Talkback: Garden butterflies

broccoli has only got lots of long thin spindly shoots on after picking the main head> I'm trying Nero di Toscano for the first time, too. But I'm growing Pentland Brig as well, as I love the sprouting shoots that sre like broccoli. Two for the price by grannyanne

Pruning standard roses
bud that faces in the direction you want the stem to grow. Outward buds are good as this opens out the plant and promotes airflow. Cut out dieback until you reach healthy tissue. Be sure to remove very thin stems, and stems that rub against each other by Cetti

Group 3 Clematis pruning
, several stems which start a bit woody (albeit very thin) and go on to new green growth and are well leaved, none are begining to flower. Should I prune them back at the time of planting out (as stated last night) or wait till after this years flowering by Lesleyjm
