Dispute
Hi guys, I'll get straight to the point, we have had a large (4ft) Scottish thistle growing in a quiet not used corner of our garden for a few years now. We have recently got serious about gardening and our garden. My wife now wants to get rid of it by Percy-Grower

NNE facing and clay soil- help!
Yes, clay soil and NNE facing... Many plants do well: helebores, ferns, geranium, phlox, globe thistle, euphorbia; some do okay: astrantia, roses, geums. I need some suggestions. Have you grown plants successfully in similar conditions? If it helps by catnip

Using vinegar to kill weeds
, thistles, and established bramble as well as the annual weeds. I think the annuals can simply be hoed into the soil, and as long as they are not flowering or setting seeds, will just dissapear quietly as long as the ground is hoed regularly to stop them re by Tim Burr

Talkback: The painted lady
We had a Painted Lady in the garden on the 28th of October. Any advance on that date. Reply to Morning Glory and Tony Williams: Painted ladies certainly favour thistles, but like most butterflies they will visit what ever is available at the time by morning glory

Talkback: Foliage plants
i love the foliage on my geranium There is a thistle called Syllibum marianum which has the most striking foliage of dark green and white. Heathers always look good because, even when not in flower, their foliage is attractive, but my favourite by kaycurtis
