Talkback: Autumn gardening jobs
the fruits of your labour and leave the garden to look after itself and the wildlife. Being too tidy is the eighth deadly sin. I am looking for something to grow at the front of my house which is in the shade. I have tried various climbers but not much by ChristyRose

Don't be too fastidious clearing up. Birds and other wildlife will need all the help we can give them through the winter. I'd forgotten how much I like Autumn, you get distracted by the thought of cold, damp weather, then a quick ten minutes tidying by Marysa

Hello, I am helping my son and his wife to tidy their garden and have come across a vigorous vine that i do not recognise.Its leaves are approx an inch long and half an inch wide, mid green, on a pink to red stem. Leaves are approx three and a half by Bluemoon2

Aquilegias and the Chelsea chop
do half the stems. I was once told that you can completely cut back aquilegias when they have finished flowering, but I thought that this was to tidy them up. It is. I cut back the flower stems, but leave the leaves - I prefer to know where they are by Swedboy

How should I shape my pittosporum
and now feel the need to 'tidy' it a bit.  My question is should I be looking to acheive a particular shape or what would you recommend I do to tidy / cut it back a little. And when please?  Thank you all.   I've got a couple of those that are suddenly by lennyboy

mine if needed now as I think that also helps them flower next year. It would be interesting to take the dead flowers off just half the shrub and see whether it made any difference. The only difference it would make is one half would look tidy by mo_strawberries

Dividing Geraniums
hello, have bought 3 x pots of hardy geraniums and am in the middle of planting them in the border. i tidied all the dead foliage and when i emptied the pots to loosen the roots, i noticed that they weren't one complete plants but separate plantlets by shazza3

. Then water and feed occassionally with a high potash (e.g. tomato) fertiliser building up a bigger and fatter bulb for next season. Normally they go dormant in the summer and the old leaves are cut off to tidy the plant, but this is not strictly necessary by mary jones
