Side of House
really narrow back and long (shade) we have part retaining wall between us and next door, I planted some spreading stuff from mums garden ivy, periwinkle, bugle , campanula etc only short space . Next door though had a twig of honeysuckle so I nurtured by Highland Jeannie

at the Peter Beales website - brilliant, lots of help), periwinkles, alchemilla mollis and I've only just started ...  Lavender wouldn't do well in shade so looks like your garden is really suitable for your mum    We have a deep north facing border by one girl and her dog(s)

"desirable" plants that become invasive monsters
where lily of the valley had virtually taken over and I pulled them out like weeds. Also  borage Lily of the valley and vinca major, planted by previous owner and spread throughout the perennial border. In fact some still pop up several feet away from by Verdun

flowers, or an acer capellipes (sp?) - snake bark maple. i'd put in at least one old rose shrub, such as rosa alba semi-plena, underplanted with some hebes or variegated vincas, and maybe some dark purple ajuga... by akebia

plants for part shade/ full shade
, erythroniums, frittillary- if moist enough. Plants - heucheras, japanese anemones, hardy geraniums- lots to chose from, Vinca minor, Solomons seal, epimediums- if dry shade, ajugas for ground cover, yes various ivies, lamiums. Grasses - I've got an evergreen by Gardengirl..

Can anybody name this?
our native orchids at Westonbirt Arboretum last year.  I' 'll see if that helps.         I agree. It is lovely.  I thought at first it looked like a vinca but reading other replies it does indeed look more like a Wood violet or viola. It's very pretty by Brendan Jones

Clay soil problem
violets, forget me nots, brunneria,  lily of the valley. lamium, lysimachia(creeping jenny, but get the yellow one not the green as it is invasive), periwinkle, aquilegia, asters, euphorbia, violas, skimmia.........and many more like or tolerate shade. All by L0la

which plants would be best?
,rogersias and acteas would grow well for you. Grasses like hakonechloa, acorus, Bowles golden grass and loads of carex with their coloured foliage too. Vincas, some variegated, arum lilies and what about dwarf and Japanese willows and maples? Chris I can recommend by chellie

New plants but panicking over predicted snow/frost this week!
are in 2 litre pots, but there are a few in 9cm pots (Vinca minor, digitalis)   Yes nut I'm finding that young plants grow so very fast right now. I'm potting on regularly now with plants seemingly doubling in size in a matter of couple of weeks....and I by Dan 2
