use weedkilller, i tend to paint it on selective invastive  weeds later in the year. I think these chemicals can have a longer term effect in the soil which affect the plants. Just dug up some front lawn for a shrub border, solid clay so have to add by cookingkate

Soil improvement
is OK especially if it's peat free. Then leave the bed for a few weeks if you can - it gives you a chance to remove weeds poking through etc, then when you plant use farmyard manure, bone meal (root developmen for shrubs and a good sprinkling of Grow by Susan O'Meara

The Nation's Love Affair
spent turning the borders and digging up weeds. Now, I don’t blame people for choosing this addiction, as I have to admit that I am also an addict and no amount of self denial will change this fact. I am an addict, I feel liberated for saying that by George Barnes

Square foot gardening
better in blocks for pollination reasons. I have read that if you are planting in rows have them going North to South, not sure if this is important. Rows are easier to hoe/weed between. Good luck with it all, it is a good size for close planting. Try by Jess.dines
