Plant in pot leftover from last year - identify?
them. Thanks so much for responding.  Petunia is the only thing it can be I think.  I'd put the pot in the 'rubbish' corner so must have assumed it had ceased to be! Further advice would be great if anyone has time.  Thanks again.   Yarrow - you can by yarrow2

Identify bug?
Can anyone tell me what this is?   It's a soldier beetle - friendly bug. Lots of info on line.They're usually in my garden here in Edinburgh but not seen any so far this year ... but then, this year ...Hmmm. ... yarrow2, Looks like a Cardinal by yarrow2

Geraniums (not Pelargoniums)
, maybe leave it alone for a while? I believe it's only been in place 2 months? It hasn't had any chance to grow good roots to keep it well settled, it will, just give it time.  Spare a thought for us older gardeners Yarrow, we knew all the old common by yarrow2

. @yarrow2:  thanks for the reminder about the Harlow Carr way of getting them to germinate.  I've just watched it again.  The chap said it could be done either in the autumn or the spring, although they favoured the spring sowing so they could identify each by Greenshoot

?  Your guess about bird seed might be right but at least it doesn't look like the usual 'weed'  that occasionally pops up around  the bird feeders at work! I'm sorry you have lost your crop, Yarrow2.  I doubt you would want to eat anything which has mould by yarrow2

Fear of messing with old roses
.)  There is no easy way to find out the 'real' name, but in my experience the supermarkets use names loosely based on the 'official' names, so you have to do a bit of guessing when doing searches.  Once they flower, it becomes a little easier. They are lovely Yarrow by yarrow2

Help identifying plants.
but it was a familiar popular one.  The flower is on a tall stem and is white - like a giant Cuckoo Pint thing but exotic.   The leaves look very similar. yarrow2 wrote (see) No. 3 looks like a bit like a houseplant I had which died on me through neglect..  I by Bonnie2

Making a cold frame and where to buy a manger.
be better at keeping the slugs at bay. That's just made me think of seaweed, which I have good access to, as its very brittle and sharp when it's dry, so I can try that as well.  Yarrow2, I like the idea of your cold frame. I'm not a DIYer, so I like to keep by Tootles

could be planted, verges the side of major roads could be planted - we all need to lobby our councillors. I noticed whilst walking the dog yesterday, one of our grass verges is full of yarrow.  It crossed my mind that it was a pity that the council by Botticelliwoman
