Stony and hard ground

I would love to grow a few vegetables and fruit but the ground is hard, stony and full of grass, weeds and moss. Apparently it probably has never seen a spade in it's live and neighbour reckons I'll end up with a sore back if I try and dig it over

mine were planted this time last year but with the weather being so unsettled up here in Durham have decided to wait a while, the ground that they are going into is covered in plastic and put my red sets in pots a  week ago with  good roots already

been kept under cover and frost free than leave until you have either hardened it off or the risk of 'hard' frosts has passed. If it is in a pot and has been outside over winter then it can go in the border anytime. As long as the ground isn't frozen. I

in winter!! Does anyone know of a ground cover plant that can outcompete ground elder, but not go mad itself ???? No - sorry  The very nature of a stron ground cover means that it will be invasive, you can't expect a plant just to stop where you would like

Interesting when you talk about weed. In Germany you can buy Yarrow in almost every colour, which is a wonderful native butterfly- and a bee magnet. And Vinca is also sold here as a nice and very effectual ground-cover against weed!. Now that makes

Hi I sowed my sweet pea seeds directly into the ground in early March.  Due to the very warm we have just enjoyed they are now growing really well and are about and inch and a half through the soil, although not quite reaching the bottom
