On 28/11/2011 in forum

country park to; no avail. Shame. Thanks Ked. I agree. There is a big market for natural hazel stakes, I'm sure, especially at this time of year when gardeners are looking for bean poles and plant supports. I think the garden centres are missing out on a

How to grow tomatoes in a greenhouse

On 22/07/2011 in Projects: Fruit and vegetables

Tomatoes will thrive in a greenhouse in midsummer with the right light, warmth, water and feed. But there's no point in ruining your hard work by watching the plant collapse under its own weight, when some simple staking will save the day. Nor do

to take an enormous root ball to keep its survival chances as good as possible. Once re-planted, you will need to stake the tree with a long stake, about six foot tall, to keep it still whilst it's re-establishing; you will also need to water

Brussels sprouts

On 26/09/2008 in Unassigned

. I now need to earth up again and stake each plant to help it survive the autumnal winds that pummel our hilly site. I don't think canes are going to withstand the onslaught, especially as the plants are so big, but, like most allotmenteers, I've got

Talkback: Purple-sprouting passion

On 28/11/2011 in forum

do I cut back hellebores, if so when?

On 22/06/2012 in forum

remember the latest correct name- I remove the old foliage in spring allowing the new shoots to grow- they are the ones that will flower next year, so dont remove those leaves in the winter, or no flowers. Be prepared to stake these big plants too
