Autumn is typically thought of as the time when leaves are falling and plants are starting to enter dormancy. While this is true, lots of plants are just beginning to flower, clematis included.

All of the autumn-flowering clematis we've picked are late-flowering types that fall into Pruning Group 3. These clematis usually start flowering around midsummer, continuing until early autumn, often longer.

'Etoile Violette'

'Etoile Violette' is one of the best known of any clematis varieties, and for good reason. It'll reliably flower until the end of September (starting in July) and has beautiful, deep purple flowers.

'Maria Cornelia'

'Maria Cornelia' is a gorgeous variety with white flowers flushed with a hint of green, so it combines well with flowers of all colours. Flowers from July until October.

'Abundance'

The petals of 'Abundance' blooms are wider than many other clematis, giving the flowers a more voluminous appearance. Flowers until September, starting in midsummer.

Clematis x triternata

Many clematis growers consider Clematis x triternata to be the most scented type out there. The almond-scented blooms appear in midsummer and last well into September.

Clematis tangutica

Yellow-flowered Clematis tangutica has flowers that last until October, which are then followed by fluffy seedheads that look lovely when dusted with frost.

'Niobe'

Clematis 'Niobe' provides a generous season of colour, starting at the beginning of summer and lasting well into autumn. The flowers are a deep plum-purple.

'Gipsy Queen'

'Gipsy Queen' has sumptuous purple blooms that appear from August to October. It's free-flowering, so you can expect it to produce a lot of flowers.
