Growing salad in a cold frame

Posted by: Jane Moore, 04 April 2008, 12.05PM

Plants in a cold frame To say that I'm delighted with my new cold frame would be the understatement of 2008. You might recall that Paul made it one afternoon last summer from some old windows and a few banister spindles from our old staircase.

Okay, it's not that new, but it still seems so to me as I haven't grown many crops in it. Last summer all I had time for was a few chillies and some pak choi - both of which were fab.

Then I took a chance in the autumn with some salad leaves and parsley, in the hope that they'd overwinter okay and provide some early salad. My gamble has well and truly paid off - we've been eating lovely mustard ('Giant Red' and 'Red Streaks') and fresh flat-leaf parsley for a few weeks now.

I've been using the cold frame crops along with some overwintered wild rocket to supplement the odd lacklustre shop-bought lettuce (I know I shouldn't but I am getting bored of winter crops now) and it's really livened things up a treat.

I'm also using my salad stuff in my sandwiches for work too - it really must be spring as I'm now off the soup!

I wish with all my heart that I could grow salad in my cold frame, BUT here in NEW BYTH we can't even think of using the cold frame until the end of April earliest. By the way New Byth is 6 miles outside of TURRIFF, but the weather is nothing like TURRIFFS.
