Plants
Nasturtium and thyme
Posted by: Jekka McVicar, 02 May 2008, 05.00PMIt's now May, and we're just 12 days away from building our display at the Chelsea Flower Show. We've had a few bouts of sunshine in the last week, during which I could literally feel the plants growing.
The new Nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus 'Black Velvet', will certainly be included in the display. Its petals, true to its name, have a wonderful velvety texture. The French lavenders, Lavandula stoechas are also perfect, so my plants with brown, purple, deep reds and gold colouring are all present and correct. I chose these particular colours to complement the Hare and Moon sundial.
I'm still not certain that some of my herbs will make it to Chelsea. The woad plants are in full bud so they just might make the show. Equally the Jekka's Thyme plants, Thymus Jekka are looking perfect, but I donât know how they will hold.
We have produced some great plants for Cleve West, who has designed the BUPA garden. He will have some giant angelicas, Angelica archangelica in full flower. I love this herb; it is not only a spectacular structural plant, it is also a beneficial medicinal herb, a culinary delight and one of the main ingredients in Gin.
For Tommaso del Buono and Paul Gazerwitz, who are creating the Daylesford garden, we have some eye-catching sages which will just be in flower, and some beautiful thymes and white flowering borage plants which are absolutely perfect.
I get the distinct impression from the emails and telephone requests I've received from other exhibitors that they're having difficulties getting stock. They'll be no sign of such difficulties at the show; the live BBC 2 programme will reveal exquisite blooms and perfect gardens, which is just how it should be at the best flower show in the world.
