Wellington boots

Posted by: Pippa Greenwood, 27 December 2007, 11.14AM

Wellington boots I always really enjoy Christmas. I enjoy it for all the smiles, the people, the happiness, and of course the Christmas pudding. True, as a veggie there is never any turkey on my plate, and as one who is none too fond of sprouts, they too were off the menu.

I'm pleased to say that this year I have received the present that was on the top of my Christmas wish list: another pair of Argyll wellies. They're not flash, they're not lined or padded and they certainly have no buckles, but they fit my feet like a dream, don't seem to object to having a sturdy pair of calves and a very thick pair of socks (or sometimes even two) jammed down inside them...and they last and last.

This is only the third pair I've had. The first pair I was issued with as a student working for the Ministry of Agriculture while studying for my second degree. I was allowed to buy them cheaply when I left... then I shelled out for a new pair about ten years ago. They're still going strong, but I have a feeling their end may be approaching.

Not bad, I reckon, as I have just worked out that between them, those first two pairs lasted for about twenty six years. In the garden, on photoshoots, recording TV, down at Sparsholt College for Gardeners' Question Time, and even sloshing about in the goose run.

Oh, and by the way, they're not green, but black with a red trim. I don't do green wellies!

I need some new wellies, but it seems to be really hard now to find the ordinary black ones that aren't too expensive. I can find plenty of expensive green wellies, or cheaper ones in pink or with weird patterns, but no ordinary black ones.

I agree with what you say. If you wash them after 2 hours wear they then stay shiny for a few months. And I can get them in a local hardware store.

Argyll wellies are the rolls royce of wellies for the garden. They are basic and not fancy.

I'm a green welly wearer and proud! I just got the most comfortable pair I've ever owned but they don't come cheap!

I had the pleasure of having bought for me a pair of Muckboots (About £55 pair) I have a problem getting wellies which fit my calves, these go off and on without the struggle of putting off and on. Best thing bought as i have no second thoughts or problem going out in the garden in wet cold days.

What shiney wellies? Mine I am afraid were even specially cleaned up a bit for their portrait photo! Now though how about boots? I'm a wearer of walking boots for gardening and find them most comfortable when wellies are not necessary (or simply too hot!).

I love my wellies and I'm now in the market for a new pair but I suffer from fallen arches. Can you recommend any that would offer in built support?
