The benefits of the sunflower
Posted by: Pippa Greenwood, 25 October 2007, 09.38AMSunflowers are often described as a great starter seed, perfect for kids - quick, reliable and HUGE results. Maybe that proves I've never really become a fully fledged grown up. I adore them, and despite the fact both my kids love gardening, it is often me who insists on including sunflowers on our seed list.
This year, once again I chose Russian Giant. I'd recommend them to anyone, for all those reasons that they are promoted as being kid-friendly, plus just look at the superb free gift they produce. You get huge height, fabulous, huge flowers and then a mathematically desirable fibbonacci series display of sunflower seeds that will now be enjoyed by wild birds for weeks to come. Many of the seeds have already been eaten by my daughter, and no doubt the mouse that plagued my greenhouse this year will also have a feast, but at that height the birds should be the main winners!
