Cruising with Gardeners' World

Posted by: Pippa Greenwood, 06 September 2007, 09.19AM

We had a good time, but in the same breath I have to say it's great being back - Matt Biggs and I have just returned from hosting the Gardeners' World magazine Gardening Cruise with 128 fellow gardeners. These trips are always packed full of great experiences, funny happenings, and of course the odd surprise...and this one was no exception!

Helen Dillon's garden The gardens we visited were wonderful, especially Helen Dillon's Garden in Dublin - anyone who has been there will, I'm sure, agree...and to those that haven't, make sure you try your hardest to get there sometime. It was one of the few gardens that I'd really love to have at my house, and would be extremely proud to have created, with its herbaceous borders that were second to none, a wonderful layout of a central geometric pool with hidden-surprise mini-gardens leading off along its length and deep in to the distance.

The Eden Project too never fails to fascinate and impress and we came away grasping numerous rather pricey packets of seed for all sorts of exotic things including cotton, loofas, sensitive plants, bat flowers. It's an expensive business having a son who is a seriously keen gardener (oh yes, and hell bent on taking over the Eden project in a few years time!!) BUT it's lovely to be home, surrounded by beans, courgettes, scrummy spuds and tomatoes galore...etc etc, and of course to be enjoying the national outbreak of slugs!!
