Deadhead flowers

All plants will benefit from having the dying flowers removed as soon as they begin to fade. It stops them putting energy into forming seed and encourages annuals to produce more flowers throughout the summer.
Takes just 10 minutes a day

Flowers

  • Summer prune wisteria
  • Water hydrangea bushes
  • Take clematis cuttings or layer new shoots

Fruit & veg

  • Shorten sideshoots growing from the framework of espalier
  • Pick fresh herbs for drying
  • Pick gooseberries, currants, strawberries and other fruits

Greenhouse

  • Train cucumbers and prune back sideshoots
  • Pick off flowers on coleus to maintain their colourful leaves
  • Pinch out tomato sideshoots

Around the garden

  • Trim hedges to keep them neat, then shred and compost the clippings
  • Top up compost or bark mulches around heathers
  • Hoe and hand weed borders
