Plant a small tree

No matter how small your garden, choose your variety carefully and you'll find there's always room for a tree. A tree will add height, colour and architectural interest to a garden and, if planted properly, should provide many years of enjoyment. Now is the ideal time to plant trees, so follow our step-by-step guide to giving your tree the best start.

Step 2
  • Collect seed from allium and sow straight away
  • Plant evergreen shrubs and conifer hedges
  • Carefully dig up gladioli corms

Fruit & veg

Step 3
  • Keep harvesting root veg such as beetroot and carrots
  • Order fruit trees and bushes for planting from late autumn
  • Finish picking beans, but leave a few pods to ripen


Step 4
  • Sow sweet peas
  • Continue harvesting chillies, peppers and other crops
  • Reduce watering potted tuberous begonias

Around the garden

Step 1
  • Clean out bird boxes
  • Level out dips in lawns with loam-based compost and oversow with grass seed
  • Clear away debris that could be sheltering slugs and snails
