Take root cuttings

Winter is the ideal time to propagate perennials from root cuttings. Follow our step-by-step guide and you'll have plenty of new plants to beef up your borders in spring.

Flowers

  • Plant heathers and trailing ivy in pots for winter colour
  • Cut down faded stems on rudbeckia and Shasta daisies
  • Finish planting tulips as soon as possible

  • Clear away climbing beans
  • Plant new fruit trees and bushes
  • Check fruits in storage

  • Keep pelargoniums looking good into winter
  • Clean glazing to let in the maximum amount of light
  • Wash pots and trays

  • Move worm compost bins under cover for winter
  • Empty glazed and ceramic pots that aren't frost-proof
  • Order farmyard manure or mushroom compost
