This mountainside estate and former home of Victoria art critic and social reformer John Ruskin combines gardens and woodland. Much like the artist JMW Turner, Ruskin fell in love with the sublime Lakeland scenery, and his gardens reflect this passion.
Restoration over the past 30 years has added modern interpretations of Ruskin’s original ideas. These lovingly maintained gardens are designed to reflect the historical significant of plants in British culture. Highlights include bluebells, rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as ferns, herbaceous planting and wildflowers. Woodland walks lead out onto the moorland above, offering wonderful mountain and lake views. Take the Steam Yacht Gondola across Coniston water to arrive in true Victorian style!
Check before you travel

Always take your 2 for 1 card with you
Some gardens have pre-booking systems in place – take your 2 for 1 card with you to validate your booking.
If a garden offers both pre-booking and walk-up options, we recommend booking prior to your visit to avoid disappointment should the garden be busy.
Please don’t make multiple pre-bookings or share your 2 for 1 card – card misuse will invalidate your discount claim at the garden.
