On the banks of the river Wear, this 100-acre wetland haven comprises ponds, waterways, a lake and lagoon, surrounded by woodland and meadows full of native plant species, including orchids. These attract a wide range of native wildlife, including birds, otters, deer, butterflies and amphibians. In the working wetland garden (RHS Chelsea Flower Show winner in 2016), rain-fed pools and channels help to produce waves of vibrant, wildlife-friendly summer flowers.
Important update
With the gradual easing of lockdown restrictions, gardens in the 2-for-1 directory are beginning to open.
To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, many have special measures in place, including pre-booking and limiting the number of visitors.
Before visiting a garden, please contact the garden directly to determine their opening status and any restrictions that may apply.
Please note: we’re unable to keep all individual 2-for-1 garden pages updated, but we will publish the latest details that we have on our weekly updates page from week commencing Monday 8 June, 2020.
