Charleston was the home of Bloomsbury artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant from 1916 onwards. Together they created a quintessential painters’ garden, mixing Mediterranean and cottage-garden styles in this small walled area. Gravel paths give structure to beds of plants with intense colour and silver foliage. The sculptures and mosaics include many works by Quentin Bell.
Important update
With the gradual easing of lockdown restrictions, gardens in the 2-for-1 directory are beginning to open.
To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, many have special measures in place, including pre-booking and limiting the number of visitors.
Before visiting a garden, please contact the garden directly to determine their opening status and any restrictions that may apply.
Please note: we’re unable to keep all individual 2-for-1 garden pages updated, but we will publish the latest details that we have on our weekly updates page from week commencing Monday 8 June, 2020.
