How to make a Christmas stair swag
Don't let your staircase let you down this Christmas - decorate it with a festive swag. We show you how.
A natural, climbing arrangement like this Christmas stair swag, can add real wow factor to your staircase and hallway at Christmas. And, although it appears striking and opulent, this look is very easy to achieve, making it a favourite home decoration for the season. Any type of foliage, branches and blooms can be used to make your stair swag, and if you include dried and long-lasting greenery, the display will stay looking great throughout the festive period.
You Will Need
- Glass jars
- Duct tape
- Chicken wire
- Moss gathered from the garden
- Plant foliage such as holly, eucalyptus stems, fir sprigs, larch cones on stems
- A selection of evergreen foliage
- Flowers
Step 1
Assemble your jars or other containers – ice-cream tubs, plastic food trays or food storage containers work well too – on alternate steps, with three at the bottom on the floor. To each container add one third damp moss and top with scrunched chicken wire. Secure in place with duct tape or other strong tape, criss-crossing it over the top.
Step 2
Next add the foliage. Start with the tallest stems and distribute them evenly throughout the arrangement. Here we used two or three long stems per tub, standing them in the centre.
Step 3
Next, position medium-length stems of foliage either side. Lastly add the shorter, bushier sprigs to fill out the sides and drape over the edges to hide the containers as much as possible.
Step 4
Follow the same process with the flowers and other foliage. To keep the display fresh, water in the containers weekly, to keep the moss damp. All the plant material can be composted when you dismantle the display.
