Small space, big impact: Make a Metre Matter is back

Make a Metre Matter is back for a second year and we’re thrilled to be partnering with 30x30 UK, the national campaign helping to secure 30 per cent of the UK’s land and sea for nature by 2030

Last year, you showed just how powerful a single square metre can be. Together, Gardeners’ World readers transformed an incredible 15,523 square metres of gardens, balconies and shared spaces – turning small plots into places that support wildlife, reduce waste and produce food. From pollinator-packed planting to ponds, edibles and compost bins, those individual metres added up to something meaningful for the planet.

Whether you’re building on last year’s success or starting fresh, dedicating just one metre of outdoor space can still make a real difference. Urban courtyard, balcony, country garden or community plot – every metre counts, especially when we act together.

There are so many ways to get involved. You might grow plants for pollinators and caterpillars, harvest homegrown veg to reduce food miles, add water to welcome in wildlife, or start a compost heap that boosts your soil while keeping garden waste out of landfill. As last year proved, it really is all possible in just one square metre.

What is 30x30?

30x30 UK is a UK-focused campaign built on the global 30x30 nature goal: protecting and restoring at least 30 per cent of land and sea for nature by 2030.

The goal of 30x30 isn't just about meeting a number, it’s also about creating connected, thriving habitats that support pollinators, clean air and water, and resilient landscapes that benefit wildlife and communities. Achieving this requires effort from everyone – governments, landowners, businesses and everyday nature lovers.

For this year’s Make a Metre Matter campaign, we’ll be sharing inspiring stories about these projects and how they will contribute to an even bigger collective push towards a healthier, more biodiverse land and sea by 2030.
