Acer palmatum is a deciduous, woody shrub native to parts of Asia and Russia. There are many garden-worthy cultivars available, which have been bred for their leaf shapes and colours.

Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku' is a great choice for smaller gardens, as it looks superb throughout the year. Its pretty pale green leaves become yellow before falling in autumn, which reveal bare winter stems with attractive red shoots in winter. Plant it next to a busy path where you can appreciate its beauty, or in a mixed, herbaceous border where its winter interest can be appreciated. 'Sango-kaku' prefers a sheltered spot, where it will be protected from the worst of the weather.
