Bergenia x schmidtii is an evergreen perennial, bearing large, glossy leaves resembling elephants' ears. It bears pretty pink flowers in April and May, and also offers excellent winter interest.

A tough plant, Bergenia x schmidtii prefers moist but well-drained soil, but will tolerate much poorer soil. Plants will quickly form dense clumps. For best results, divide clumps every three to five years to maintain their vigour.
