Hakonechloa is a genus of beautiful, low-growing ornamental grasses. Forming gently arching mounds, hakonechloas are perfect for softening the edges of a path or growing in a pot. They look fantastic when planted alongside more formal plants, such as box, Buxus sempervirens. Its architectural blooms can be dried and used in flower arranging.
Hakonechloa macra 'Albovariegata’ is a particularly striking variety, bearing narrow green-white striped leaves. It complements ferns and hostas perfectly, but works equally well grown on its own as a focal point.
For best results, grow Hakonechloa macra 'Albovariegata’ in moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Cut foliage down before new growth starts in spring and mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost.
