A winter-flowering staple in the cottage garden, hellebores produce large clusters of saucer-shaped flowers in white, pink, green, mauve or smoky purple.
Helleborus foetidus ‘Wester Flisk Group’ has more finely divided, elegant foliage than most hellebores, and its leaves, stems and lime green flowers are suffused with maroon colouring. The flowers last for several months and associate well with other spring flowers that enjoy dappled shade such as coloured primroses, violets, dwarf narcissi, grape hyacinth and spring flowering hardy cyclamen the foliage makes a good foil for lily of the valley later, and in autumn looks superb with Iris foetidissima.
For best results grow Helleborus foetidus ‘Wester Flisk Group’ in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. Cut back the large leathery leaves when flowers and new foliage emerge. Plants hybridise and self-seed freely. Like all hellebores, Helleborus foetidus ‘Wester Flisk Group’ dislikes being moved once established, so should not be divided.
