There is a bewildering diversity of lettuce types, with more appearing all the time. Butterheads are soft loose-hearted varieties, crispheads or icebergs are large dense and crunchy, cos types have upright crisp leaves, and loose-leaf do not make hearts but are gathered as dense leafy heads or individual leaves are picked over a long period.

Lactuca sativa 'Salad Bowl Red' is a loose-leaf lettuce, with pretty red crimped leaves with a good flavour, suitable for salads and also garnishing. It works well when alongside green-leafed variety Lactuca sativa 'Salad Bowl', both in the garden and on the plate.

Grow Lactuca sativa 'Salad Bowl Red' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. With its decorative appeal it's also at home in an ornamental border, grown as edging or scattered among other plants.
