Hailing from the mountains of Ecuador, Passiflora sanguinolenta bears large leaves with two wing-like lobes, which form a backdrop to huge, candle-like pink flowers, which appear from spring to autumn. More compact in habit than Passiflora caerulea, it’s ideal for a small garden, where it may be trained up an obelisk or against a south facing wall.
Passiflora sanguinolenta ‘Maria Rosa’ is a particularly lovely selection. Grow in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Frost hardy, it may need winter protection. Cut back after flowering.
