Phormiums or New Zealand flax are popular plants for adding an architectural touch a variety of planting schemes. Their elegant long leaves are evergreen, making them ideal plants for winter colour. They make an extremely effective focal point in gravel gardens and large borders, and also in seaside gardens, because of their tolerance of salty winds.

Phormium tenax 'Joker' produces striking blades of green and pink-striped foliage. It's perfect for growing among cornus either in the border or a large container, for a dazzling winter display.

Grow Phormium tenax 'Joker' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. The leaves can be damaged by strong cold winds, so plant in a sheltered spot. In colder regions protect the roots with a thick mulch in winter.
