Acer palmatum is a deciduous, woody shrub native to parts of Asia and Russia. There are many garden-worthy cultivars available, which have been bred for their leaf shapes and colours.

Sometimes referred to as the floating cloud maple, Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' has beautiful mottled and variegated leaves in white and green, which give the whole tree a light and fluffy, cloud-like look. Leaves turn a rich range-red before falling in autumn.

For best results, grow 'Ukigumo' in partial shade, and protect it from the harshest winds, which may cause leaf scorch.
