Astrantias are superb perennials for growing under trees, on a stream bank or in a moist border. They prefer moist soils but will tolerate drier conditions as long as the plants are mulched with leafmould or another suitable moisture-retaining medium.

Astrantia major 'Shaggy' has striking, large flowers with green-tipped, pointed white bracts, held well clear of its mound of glossy green leaves. It combines well with rich, dark red astrantias such as 'Hadspen Blood' and 'Ruby Wedding'. The RHS has awarded it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.

For best results, grow Astrantia major 'Shaggy' in partial shade in moist but well-drained soil. Like other cottage garden astrantias, the flowers are good for cutting. After flowering, astrantias can be rejuvenated by cutting them back close to the ground – fresh new foliage and a late crop of flowers appear shortly afterwards. Astrantias don't spread far but are well known for self-seeding.
