Camellias are handsome evergreen shrubs that grow best in acid soil with light shade. Depending on the variety, bold flowers are displayed solitary or in clusters, brightening up gardens early in the year, while the glossy and leathery leaves remain throughout the year.

Camellia x williamsii hybrids are the toughest and easiest camellias to grow. Camellia x williamsii 'Contribution' has a semi double flower with bright yellow stamens. Grow in moist but well-drained, lime-free soil, in a sheltered site in sun or shade. Cut back untidy branches after flowering to keep the plant compact.
