Smoke bush, Cotinus coggygria is a shapely, rounded shrub or small tree, grown for its summer interest and autumn colour. Its summer flowers give the appearance of a smoky haze over the branch tips, hence its common name.

Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit' is the first golden-leaved smoke bush. It makes a striking shrub for the border, looking particularly attractive next to bronze-leaved plants. Its glowing, golden yellow foliage is tinted with red when young, and is complemented by smoky yellow flowers in June and July. In autumn, the leaves turn fiery shades of red and orange.

Grow Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit' in well-drained fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or leafmould. It requires little or no pruning.
