Now almost extinct in the wild, the chocolate lily, Fritillaria affinis, is becoming a popular garden plant. It's native to the Pacific coast of North America, from California north to British Columbia and east to western Idaho.

Fritillaria affinis flowers from mid- to late spring and bears dark purple-black flowers with green-grey mottling. It's easy to grow in temperate gardens, and thrives when grown in moist but well-drained soil in sun to partial shade. Plants benefit from cool conditions in summer.
