Cranesbill, or hardy geraniums, are perennial border plants with saucer-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, purple and blue. They're easy to grow, thrive in shade and flower for months. Geraniums are popular in cottage garden schemes and offer a long season of pollen and nectar for a number of pollinators, particularly bees.

Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart' bears mats of aromatic foliage from which delicate soft pink to white flowers appear throughout summer. The leaves turn a beautiful bronze before falling in autumn. It's well suited to growing in rock gardens or using to edge paths. It also works well in containers.

For best results grow Geranium macrorrhizum 'Spessart' in a partially shaded spot in well-drained soil. Mulch annually with well-rotted manure or compost.
