Heleniums add impact to the late summer and early autumn border, with their daisy-like red and yellow flowers. Heleniums aren't too fussy, and thrive in most soils with good drainage.
Helenium 'Butterpat' is one of the best heleniums. It has large, 7cm-wide flowers with a prominent, raised yellow-brown eye and outward-pointing yellow petals. It's very free-flowering. Grow it in drifts, perhaps merging with the red 'Moerheim Beauty' and crimson 'Bruno'. It may need staking on exposed sites. The Royal Horticultural Society has given Helenium 'Butterpat' its prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
