Sambucus nigra 'Marginata' is a variegated elder. It has good year-round interest, bearing attractive, musk-scented, small, white flowers in spring, impressive clusters of glossy black berries in late summer and yellow-margined, dark green leaves.
For best results grow Sambucus nigra 'Marginata' in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. It's well suited to growing at the back of a shrub or mixed border, but also looks good in a wild or natural setting, such as a woodland garden. While birds love the fruits, humans should be careful as excessive consumption can cause nausea, especially if eaten raw.
