A hardy annual, summer savoury has slender bronze green leaves and pretty lilac flowers, which are popular with bees. It's perfect for growing in pots, ornamental borders and herb gardens alike.

Leaves are aromatic and peppery and have a flavour similar to thyme. They may also be used to aid digestion, reduce fevers and soothe bee stings.

Summer savoury, Satureja hortensis, makes an excellent companion plant; when grown next to broad beans it can help deter aphids. Summer savoury leaves are also reputed to improve the flavour of broad beans when cooked together.
