The potato vine Solanum laxum ‘Album’ has slightly fragrant, white flowers, each with a central yellow beak, throughout mid to late summer. Like its relative Solanum crispum, its wiry stems need tying to wires or trellis for support, but its small, semi-evergreen leaves are thinner and more delicate-looking, and it’s far less hardy. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
Grow Solanum laxum ‘Album’ in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny site, ideally in front of a south- or west-facing wall. Alternatively, grow it in pots, trained up an obelisk, which you can move indoors in autumn. It can also be grown as a conservatory or houseplant.
