Salad potatoes have grown in popularity in recent years, thanks to their delicious flavour and waxy texture. Solanum tuberosum 'Belle de Fontenay' is an old French potato from the 1800s. An early potato, it produces small, smooth, kidney-shaped tubers with a creamy yellow flesh. The tubers store after harvesting for several months and the flavour is even said to improve with age.

For best results dig over the soil well and incorporate plenty of compost or rotted manure before planting. Water the tubers thoroughly two weeks before lifting. Solanum tuberosum 'Belle de Fontenay' are delicious boiled or steamed.
