Commonly known as Stoke's aster, or simply stokesia, Stokesia laevis is a pretty species of aster native to Georgia and South Carolina, and is the only species in the genus Stokesia. A hardy, evergreen perennial, it will hold its foliage all year during mild winters. From midsummer to the first frosts it produces fantastically fringed lilac-coloured flowers that are a magnet for bees, hoverflies and butterflies.
Stokesia laevis 'Klaus Jelitto' is slightly more compact that the species, and produces large, pale lilac-blue flowers. Create a river of colour by planting it in bold drifts close to the front of borders. Better still, the flowers cut very well so are ideal for popping in a vase indoors.
For best results, grow Stokesia laevis 'Klaus Jelitto' in full sun or partial shade in fertile, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil and water regularly in periods of hot, dry weather. Deadhead frequently to ensure new blooms are produced. When planting, heavy, wet soils are best avoided.
